Great park for picnics, hiking and disk golf

L

LYNNETTE RIFFEL

The predominant attraction to this park is the 18 hole disk golf feature. This covers the entire south and west side of the lake. We took the trail around the north and east side of the lake all the way around through the disk golf area. The north side features a dock which is in need of some repairs but is still in working condition. The walk around the lake is smooth grass and some sandy areas with areas of shade. While the baskets were in good repair some had significant foliage and weeds that need to be trimmed back to access the basket on the east side. This lake has no water access but a few small benches for overlooking the water. There were two things I did not like about this park: the noise from the turnpike mainly on the east side and the horrific smell of hot trash and landfill on the southeast side. It might not be as bad if the wind were in a different direction. There is a second trail head North of the lake with public vault bathrooms and a covered picnic area with tables.

PROS: Nice place to enjoy a hike, study ecotones, observe nature. It offers a 9-acre human-made lake where you can observe a variety of waterfowl, a very popular 18-hole disc golf course surrounding the lake, a 44-acre scrub forest of oak and pine with several trails to enjoy. Impressive numbers of black and turkey vultures soaring and ketteling around . CONS: Extremely noisy due to its location adjacent to the Turnpike. Strong, unpleasant smell (depending on wind direction) due to its proximity to Mount Trashmore (the garbage dump). Also, the composting bathrooms appear to be always locked, so do not count on being able to use them. We appreciate enormously Saint Lucie County's land protection and conservation efforts. Saint Lucie County rocks!

If your going stercrazy with the children, put them in the car and take a picnic and spend a few hours. You'll decompress and the kids can have a blast.
