Amazing historic site. Very low entrance fee for such a large museum/historic site. Built for the defence of Canada and Halifax harbour mainly against a possible invasion from the United States in the 1800's. Live musket demonstrations and guided tours every couple hours. Also on hand is the Nova Scotia Army Museum on the second floor of the main building in the courtyard. A must see for all.

If you're doing the rounds of historical museums in the Maritime provinces, the Halifax Citadel is a MUST!! Lots of renovation has taken place there over the past 60 years that i've been going there: my first trip to this wonderful fort was in 1961, as a small child. I LOVED climbing on the big guns and peering into the cracks and crannies of the fort. Since then they have done a PILE of work, very professionally restoring a lot of how it must have felt in the 1800s. Has a real "military" flavor about it, yet is child-friendly still. Recommended!!

So much information visually, written and verbal. The gentleman in the museum was extremely knowledgeable about all of the exhibits in the museum as well as providing personal details.

I can't believe I almost missed the WWI trenches. Walking through it was a spooky experience. On the other end of the emotional spectrum, is the Vimy Ridge replica which is about 4 ft high but looks much grander. It caught me off guard and my emotions got the better of me. This replica monument has solidified my resolve to visit the real monument someday.

We loved it. So much interesting history, from several different time periods. Focuses mainly on military history. Great for families with school age children.
