We were invited as guests to attend a session here a couple of years ago. We were kept entertained by a duet of speaker and worker bee (chef) as they explained and then prepared an awesome meal. Well worth attending, a wonderful way to spend an evening with your loved one and/or friends/ business associates. Kudos to having something so unique in Williamsburg.

This is such a great little place. Not quite a restaurant, not quite cooking class. More like a quaint dining experience. My wife and I wish we'd found this place sooner! We both enjoy eating quality food where the flavors stand on their own merits, that dont need a ton of ingredients or intricate preparation to taste good. On top of tasty food, there were great nuggets of info with the food science and chemistry of the ingredients! Worth every penny!

I don’t know what to call this place! It’s half restaurant, half culinary arts school, half piano bar, half slap-stick routine, half stand up comedy and another half chef supply store! Whatever it is, it is a full evening of fun and great food. Chef Gonzales and his sidekick Nick kept us entertained, but the real work horse of the place is Sheree (sp.?) who kept all the wine glasses filled and food placed before us. She was non-stop motion taking care of the guests! An evening here is not only fun, but it’s educational. We learned not only about “how” to make some delicious food, but also we learned about why we should choose specific ingredients for these recipes. As a restaurant, the food itself is worth the entry fee. Dining over the course of three hours is relaxing and it allows us time to meet other guests and savor the food before us. We had a volunteer pianist from William & Mary, who also was an excellent drummer, who demonstrated both skills. If he learns to cook, this place might have competition in the future! Not sure if he’ll be able to replace Neil Peart, though. Just as the wines were well-paired with the courses, chef and sous-chef were well paired as a “punny” pair of nyuk-nyuks hurling lame duck laughables and predictable puns. The two together are a Laurel & Hardy/Abbott & Costello routine that feed well off each other (pun intended). All tolled, this is a great place to take your spouse or a date. You will have a blast and leave with a full, happy belly!

2017-09-12 the food and the service was excellent! Making a reservation may require some patience but good things come to those that wait! Call them, leave voicemail to make your reservation. They will call you back at their earliest convenience. Expect to be added to their waiting list and seating may not be available for 2 or 3 months, keep calling and ask them did anyone cancel, and they can/will add you to a closer date in the future if someone cancels. Had to pay upon arrival, everyone waited in the store/shop until 630pm, and then everyone moved to the dining room were rows of tables were set and seats are assigned, so look for your name on a card on top of the table. They serve sparkling cider, water and wine throughout dinner. When you enter, you pickup a glass of your choice of beverage, and they are serving little finger foods/snacks. There was a young man playing piano and shortly after everyone was seated, Chef John played a song or two on harmonica, accompanied by the young man on piano, that was very nice and entertaining. Chef John did most of the talking to and entertaining the guests, and Chef Nick did some talking and entertaining as well, Chef Nick did most of the food preparation, so that all can see. You will definitely learn a lot during this dinner class, how to cook and prepare items on the menu, ingredients to buy and not to buy, and a hardcopy of the recipes are handed out to all the guests, so you can read the recipe while watching the food being cooked, prepared and served. Sheree serves plates a special takes the plates and silverware after each part of the meal. There is also another young man that continuously restock the shelves of plates and cookware throughout dinner for Chef John and Chef Nick. The cornbread, the salad, the soup, the scallops, chicken and dessert were all very good and satisfying!

What an amazing experience. We didn’t ask too many questions when we received a gift certificate to a chefs kitchen and I’m so glad that we were surprised. We thought that we would be up front cooking with Chef John and taking a class. Instead we were seated comfortably and taught about music, wines, spices, cookware and, of course, the foods we were eating. We were serenaded by, none other than, an astrophysicist major from W&M. He played the piano and drums and was absolutely delightful. Though I’m not personally a wine drinker, we learned a great deal about wines and where the champagne and three wines that were served we’re from and where to purchase them. Chef John was funny, interesting, an amazing chef and an excellent teacher. I WILL go again and again. The vegetarian options they prepared for my husband were amazing and it was a lovely night. Do yourself a favor and indulge in this event at least once. You’ll definitely go back again!
