It was a Great experience of learning scuba diving with my instructor Alex and Michael, they are super nice, experienced and patient to their students. Everyone in the society are super nice and friendly. The price was fairly good. Btw it’s not just for UBC student, anyone can join event and take course. if you are planing on starting scuba diving, Strongly recommended here

I am a university student, I have been diving with the UBC Aquatic Society for a little over a year now, and I absolutely love it! The UBC Aqua Soc is well run, organized and the staff are among the friendliest and most knowledgeable I have met! This was the shop that I first got my open water license from, and came back for a dry suit specialty, enriched air specialty, and my advanced open water. The instructors are amazing: they are consistently positive, very knowledgeable of all the secrets of their dive sites, and have an unbelievable willingness to put in the most effort in to make everyone comfortable. I am also consistently blown away by how well the shop is managed so professionally by a PADI Course Director and how they help with all diving needs! Some of my greatest memories diving have been through this shop from diving wrecks and carving pumpkins underwater, to wolf eels, octopus, sea lions, and other amazing ocean creatures! I really hope to continue to advance my own diving and I there is no where I would rather do it than the UBC Aqua Society!

Course is too fast paced, and relatively large groups with very little opportunity to practice under supervision if you don’t opt for the private lesson route and even then. Each exercise is practiced at a strict minimum, if possible only once... very different from my normal approach where practice makes perfect. Great instructors with lots of experience but this could be the down fall as it makes the class relay on pass successes and not assessing the special need of each group. Timing allows for very little flexibility if anything goes wrong, if I had to chose now, I would of chosen an other provider.

I had an awful experience here. I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Told them I had been 14 years since initial open water training and 10 yrs without a dive. They suggested I'd be fine for the open water dive with a group but then I pushed to go in the pool first before committing to open water. Went in the pool with them for a refresher which included very little basic material review. Afterwards (because I forgot basic stuff and it all went poorly) I was accused of lying about my PADI open water cert. Turns out the instructor wasn't given information it being 14 yrs since my open water cert (nor were they told about my former eardrum rupture from diving). Furthermore, they refused to refund money for the outdoor dive even though that dive full anyway (I was only on a wait list - and had only agreed to go if the pool went well). I eventually got a refund when I argued at length with them and threatened to go to the board / ownership. Other friends who went on the dive said it was just far too casual, staff/ instructors were relaxed and friendly, but just not running a tight ship.

UBC Aqua has some of the most knowledgeable and attentive instructors I have ever met! I have taken courses here all the way from Advanced Open Water to Divemaster and have seen firsthand how much the instructors care about each and every student who comes through UBC Aqua. Their club dives also provide a fun, relaxed and welcoming environment to really allow diving to flourish as a passion. I will definitely be diving with UBC Aqua for years to come!
