I was surprised that this shrine was built for Oda Nobunaga's assassin. It's an interesting history if you looked it up.

Neat. Not sure how accurate it is historically.
Great for Japanese history buffs, something to skip for everyone else. In 1582 Akechi Mitsuhide rebelled against and killed his liege, Oda Nobunaga. Afterward he tried to escape, but realizing it was impossible he took his own life. His men buried his head here to hide it until they could take it away under cover of night. Today there is a small shrine dedicated to Mitsuhide to mark the spot where his head was buried.
Not much more than a sign and a small shrine.
東山三条の東山駅から白川沿いに歩くとすぐ明智光秀の首塚はある。お餅やさんの角を曲がった通り抜けの出来ないアパートが並ぶ細い路地にあるので、ここを目指して来ないとこのような所にあるとは思えないほど見過ごしてしまいがちな場所。 きれいに整えられて、看板や新聞のコピーにここにどのような経緯で明智光秀の首塚があるのかが丁寧に説明してあり、とても整備されている。お餅屋さんが管理されているようだ。 胴塚とはかなり距離が離れているが、京都市営地下鉄東西線で１本で行ける場所なので(小野駅)足跡を辿ってみるのもよいのではないだろうか。
主君信長を死に追いやった謀反人 の首塚ということもあるかもしれ ないが、とても小さな祠です。 しかし、きちんと手入れされ、 長い間大事にされている感じ からは明智光秀が、良い武将で あったであろうという様子が うかがえる場所です。 地下鉄東山駅からすぐ、白川の ほとりを少しあるいた先に ひっそりとありました。 目印は和菓子屋さん。
