If you are looking for 1 day excursion outside of Rome, this is a perfect place! Very calm and peaceful place. Amazing Frescoes inside. Be sure to get in with the guide as they will tell you the detailed history behind this place, frescoes and every corner of this monastery. They do Italian and English guided tour. There is no entrance fee or guide fee, but be sure to leave a donation at the end of the tour :) *Due to covid you have to enter with the guide and you cannot get in to the cave and touch St.Benedict foot. There is also a lovely souvenir shop outside.

The sacred caves of St Benedict is a very beautiful place where St Benedict is said to have spent 3 yrs of his life in meditation and prayer. The Monastery is built on the side of a rocky cliff and is a must visit if you are in Subiaco. You can drive to the entrance of the monastery and then a walk of around 100m gets you to the entrance. The guides were excellent, we had Francesca, who gave a detailed description of the history, the painting and the events depicted in the painting. You can leave a donation for the guides at the end of the tour. There is a nice little souvenir shop where you can buy religious objects as well as other things like candies and wines.

70 km (about 40 miles) from Rome, in the upper part of the valley of the river Aniene, is the city of Subiaco. Known as “the land of monasteries”, this area has long been a destination for tourists, as shown by the remains of the imperial villa built by the Emperor Nero. And it is precisely on this spot, on the remains of Nero’s villa, where in the 6th century AD, Benedict of Nursia built the first of the twelve monasteries that he eventually founded all around the valley. In the monastic complex of the “Sacred Cave” - known also as the “Holy Grotta” - there are two churches, one of top of the other, and many chapels and caves covered in frescoes dating from different artistic periods. The next step in our journey leads us to the lower church. To get to it, you need to walk down a staircase located to the right of the transept in the upper church.

Amazing to see how they could build this hundreds of years ago. Inspite of pandemium lots of Italian tourists either hiking or visiting the monastery.

A beautiful, quiet location, a perfect place for reflection and prayer. I recommend the guided tour for all those interested in Arts and Church history. Would definitely go back.
