This is so far the most amazing basilica in Rome. And the most impressive after the San Peters Dom. I was mind blown by the golden ceilings the huge statues and the wall paintings and the state of everything is incredible. The outside garden was definitely worth visiting. I suggest you go during lunchtime we were nearly alone.

The second of the four largest basilica in Rome. Christianity's largest church. You have to see it when you go to the Vatican. Entrance fee to Vatican museums including this basilica is 29.50 euro. But if you're lucky (like us), admission is free during some evening rites. :) :)

Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano has the title of ecumenical mother church among Roman Catholics and I was amazed to see it in real life. I find this church very beautiful. The archbasilica is sited in the city of Rome. It is outside Vatican city which approximately 4 kilometers. The artwork on the ceiling is spectacular and the church is lined with enormous sculptures. Behind the grand Baroque facade topped with Christ and his followers welcoming the pilgrims, the interior of the church is a fine example of late Baroque architecture. Although St John in Lateran was one of the first Catholic churches, the archbasilica had a massive Baroque makeover. Nearby stands the tallest obelisk in the entire world, unceremoniously without signs or fanfare as thousands of people pass by without realising its significance. Carved in 357 AD and once standing at the Circus Maximus before being lost, it was rediscovered and moved to the cathedral where it has stood since 1588. Entering into the church you’ll see the long massive beautiful door. My family and enjoyed visiting this church much more than every other because its much more peaceful and very quiet than St. Peter's Basilica which is more crowded all the time. The crowd is significantly less and much more respectful because only people who knew of its significance would go out of their way to visit. Of all the churches in I have been to see, the Basilica di san Giovanni in Laterano is one of my best favourite baroque church in Rome. I highly recommend to see and visit the church it is really amazing.

Basilica di San Giovanni is just breathtaking. I cannot describe it by words because it has to be seen and every inch of this architectural marvel needs to be taken in. In a way it is more mesmerising and grandiose than the Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano at least comparing the desing of the ceiling. If you love the architecture or you are a religious person, you must visit this Basilica at least once in your lifetime.
