My friend and I came here on a Sunday afternoon and it was quite busy. We had to wait awhile to order because there was only one server working and all the tables were taken. He really did his best and was very kind. By the time we got a table, our food came out so it was perfect timing. We both got the Cuban sandwich. I got a side of salad and she got chips. The sandwich was delicious! Can’t wait to return to get the sandwich again and try their other menu items!

This was my second time here at Pilar. I used to live in the neighborhood and came here for brunch and I remembered enjoying it. I was in the neighborhood again and stopped in for dinner. The dinner started off poorly but quickly recovered. We ordered the Cuban nachos and they arrived in less than 5 minutes, cold soggy, and sitting in a pool of liquid. Perhaps it was a leftover prepared plate but it was gross. We told the waitress and she promptly replaced it with fresh nachos. It was interesting and tasty. I had a mojito and my husband had the pink Flamingo. Both drinks were standard and good. The ropa vieja was delicious, really rich but a tad bitter as if it was stewed too long and burned at the bottom a bit. I've cooked ropa vieja all my life, so this flavor is familiar for the those rough cooking nights haha. It was still good and I cleared my plate. The maduros were perfect, the black beans were tasty, but there wasn't enough rice. My husband had the garlic shrimp plate and he also enjoyed it. We didn't have dessert. Service was generally good and they fit us in as a walkin. I would come back again, especially since Cuban options are limited.

Don't get me wrong, the pressed cuban sandwich is good. The green sauce was fantastic. However, at 17.50 after tax I can't recommend this sandwich. Save your money and eat somewhere else. There's great food nearby. For what it's worth, you can get a better sandwich at half the price 3 blocks south at the bodega on Bedford/Gates.

Outdoor dining is lovely on a nice day (individual heaters available too). So glad we got to try this place, had this place bookmarked for years but never had the chance. Shared the patacones with shrimp, avocado and this pepper/tomato sauce or salsa spread - great appetizer, thought it was kind of small, two plantain rounds with maybe 4 shrimp for 14. We tried the grilled cheese with sweet plantains and the pernil entree. Definitely liked the grilled cheese better - what's better than perfectly ripe maduros, salty melty cheese and super buttery perfectly toasted bread ?!? Pernil wasnt bad but was a little disappointed by black beans, maybe I have high standards for rice and beans. Liked that it came with both maduro and a little yucca thrown in for good measure. Ended up being 30 per person including tip, which is fair for the location. Quick, efficient and friendly service.

The food is always flavorful and delicious. 4 out of 5 times I’d say the portion size is sufficient for the dollar value but either way, I’ve never had a bad meal. Cocktails are on point and service is friendly; this is definitely my favorite joint in the neighborhood

Best birthday brunch ever! Our waiter paid for my birthday girl (mom) cocktail and sent us home with a delicious slice of key lime pie Service was so personal, made us feel like we were their special guests. The food...totally authentic (and we are Cuban). Croquetas, patacones, arroz con pollo & pernil were spot on. Will probably be back every time I visit my daughter in Brooklyn

I love this spot so much! I take my mom there regularly. The plantains are always perfectly cooked. I've had the best Cuban sando ever. The staff is great. The flavors are all so well balanced. Its a bit pricey but worth it

The service incredible, staff is incredibly friendly. The drinks were great. I orderered vaca frita and it was delicious. The white rice was not fully cooked but the beans tasted deliciously home made. I also tried their tres leches cake and although it was good cake it was dry for a tres leches. I will definitely go back to try other desserts and eat more vaca frita.
