I had a holiday here many moons ago. Around 25 years ago to be exact as a young 14 year old boy. I got a 6 month detention centre sentence. It was an eye opener for sure. I remember my 1st night being a little apprehensive about what to expect and a lovely female prison officer called Dot told me she had left some chocolate under my pillow. It was white chocolate too, my fav. I would love to tell you all it helped me change my ways but it didn't fully. However, after another short holiday at a YOI I finally learnt my lesson and am now married with 4 children and haven't been arrested since the age of 19. I turned my life around There was a boy trying to hang himself above me on a different wing on a regular basis and some nutters around but it was safe place all in all and the prison officers were mostly kind and seemed to care about us youngsters. I have fond memories on my day release out just as my sentence was coming to an end and was took to Dover castle. Looking back Medway was a learning experience and in the long run it did help me change my ways

Another hotel in the hmp chain. This one is small and aimed at the younger audience. Had bad reviews when G4S ran it but since bought by new owners is alot better. Probably lots to do for the youngsters, great time to be had by all

As a supply teacher, now retired, I worked at the G4S training centre, Medway, for a few months. I am no longer in contact with any staff in the centre and have nothing to gain other than seeing justice done to caring and dedicated professionals. It is a dreadful slur if anything rubs off on teaching staff or security staff acting as classroom assistants. I never once witnessed anything of the kind described in the broadcast taking place in the education block. When kids did occasionally 'kick off' in front of teaching staff, 5 or 6 security staff always came running to immobilise the child by holding to protect them, certainly not hitting, swearing or restricting breathing. They were then transferred either to a 'cooling off' room, or their bedrooms. Moreover, extreme measures were routinely taken by teaching staff to deny the trainees the means of harming themselves. If abuse had happened in front of teaching staff, I am certain that it would have been reported to head of education who would have taken it further. Teaching staff are taught to defend themselves if attacked, using a technique called 'Breakaway'. The focus of the technique is self defence WITHOUT harming the assailant. There is genuine affection between teaching staff and trainees. I was embraced and hugged by an ex offender when he recognised me at a train station, even though I had never personally taught him. That reflects the attitude of trainees to the teaching staff. I will personally testify to anyone on this subject.

really bad experience on telephone, I was calling to book a visit for my little cousin. officers didn't know what they was doing. I was on the phone they had the phone sitting for around 6/7 minutes speaking to others in the back while I was waiting for a response. when I called back they answered & hung up again. not impressed.
