Brilliant museum for young and old. Impressive boat exhibit, gripping interactive exhibits of naval battles.

This stunning museum has something to offer for all ages. If you are interested in naval or Finnish history this is a must visit for foreigners and locals. The first thing you will notice when you arrive is the unique architecture of the building itself. Its shape makes it stand out, and you have a beautiful view from the top of the museum. The entrance feels grand. The entire interior, including exhibitions, has an elegant modern feel to it and is superbly designed. The museum consists of multiple exhibitions, a permanent one and up to 4 temporary ones. Descriptions of works are shown in Finnish, Swedish, Russian & English. Some pieces do only have Finnish and Swedish text so be warned. The permanent exhibition is a wonderful look into Finnish (Russian/Swedish) naval history starting from the medieval era. It holds everything from boats to tools. But it is much more than that, as reading and studying what the museum offers gives a lot of insight in the progression of Finnish culture over the years. The layout switches up the timeline which keeps it from becoming monotonous, but can be confusing. The temporary exhibitions usually consists of one related to Finnish traditions, one for local artists and two with varying topics. When i visited there was an exposition on the Swedish/Russian naval wars near Kotka and the impact on the people. It was shown in a moody, ominous vibe setting it apart. The museum is a good visit with kids, as they offer activities for younger children to do in between pieces, shown by a cute cartoon dog. The temporary “monsters of the sea” exhibition also doubles its purpose as a playground.

A very nice place, even if you aren't interested in boats or the Finnish marine history. The prices to get in aren't too high and in my opinion it's worth every penny.
