The Langar Khana and Shishi gates are located on the northwest side of the fort. They are mounted at opposite ends of a roughly triangular courtyard from which the defenders could rain down fire on any attackers from the high walls on the south side. The name "Shishi" is derived from "Shishi Darwaza" which means "Glass Gate" in Persian. The "glass" refers to the kashi kari tiles that used to adorn the arch's spandrels, and are thought to be one of the earliest instances of this technique which the Mughals adopted wholeheartedly in Lahore. The name of the other gate, Langar Khana, refers to the kitchen embedded within it which is complete with its own water supply.
