A wonderful view to see train taking a full spiral and getting in a tunnel. ️️️️

Just as your vehicle comes down Kicking Horse Pass on Canada One, you will be crossing from Alberta to British Columbia, and Banff to Yoho National Parks. Shortly after this, there is a popular pull out that describes the masterful feat of engineering that the Spiral Tunnels are. And over the look-out wall is one of tunnel entrances. The original route of the Canadian Pacific Railroad came through here. The gradient was very steep and there were frequent dangerous breakdowns, and the use of additional engines was also expensive. In 1907, to solve the problem, the CPR decided to build a pair of Spiral Tunnels that would replace the direct route. This allowed the grade to be reduced to a more manageable level. This effort took nearly two years, cost nearly 1 Million Dollars (at the time) and involved the labor of 1000 men. Later, Trans-Canada Highway was constructed through the pass in 1962, basically following the original CPR route. Its highest point is at Kicking Horse Pass with an elevation of 5,390 feet. Today these Spiral Tunnels are used by the Rocky Mountaineer Railway for their tours which run from Calgary AB to Victoria, BC. We saw all this in the rain, and we did not see a train using the tunnels, but the visuals helped us understand the concept much better. The Spiral Tunnel concept is best learned from this vantage point. When one rides the train, it is pitch-black in the tunnels and one is not aware of what the train is doing.

The best place to view trains going through the spiral tunnels. A bit out of the way, but we'll worth the trip. Much better than the viewing spot for the lower spiral tunnel.

An amazing feat of engineering especially given when the tunnel was cut through the rock! We waited quite a time but sadly we not able to see a train going through, but it was a worth seeing.
