What a fabulous mill - beautiful wheel running - you simply can't beat the sound of running water with the wind whistling through the trees - utterly restorative

Lovely place and just around the corner from Eskdale Campsite, and a hop, skip & a jump from The Boot Inn. Excellent information boards detailing the history of the building and life in the valley. Our welcome and introduction to the mill was very good. Seeing & hearing the mill equipment working as it should was brilliant. The tandem water wheels outside powering the mill was interesting, and a quick nip up the path takes you to see the wonderful waterfalls - we were particularly lucky as there'd been 24 hours worth of rain helping to swell the beck!! Limited opening at present due to Coronavirus, so book a slot. It is well worth a visit for children and adults alike, although not suitable for persons who have mobility problems due to the age and type of building which contains steps. Once you've finished your visit, there's the village shop to purchase an ice cream or local gifts, or call in at The Boot Inn for some lunch. Both places have earned a thumbs up from us.
What a find, this was much better than expected. We were shown round by a wonderful lady who is a volunteer who explained in detail what went on here and who lived here, she introduced us to another volunteer who explained and showed us the workings. They were both so friendly and passionate about the mill that they obviously loved so much. They are slowly finding more and more things about the mill and things that would have belonged there. There is not really any wheelchair access which is a shame but that's the nature of the building unfortunately not something they can change very easily. They are as far as I can tell looking after the building solely on donations but are hoping to get status and funding soon so that they can get help in saving this very important and loveable piece of history. We hope to come back one day and see how they have done. It's not expensive at all to get in all they ask is a small donation and for the experience you get it's well worth dipping into your pocket. This is a must stop and visit place that you really should not miss out on
Recently reopened (July 19) after a big refurbishment. oldest working water mill in Cumbria, with 3 working water wheels. Friendly welcome & dogs are all all allowed too. Lots of information on three history of flour milling here over the years. Well worth a visit.
A fantastic experience for kids and adults alike. With working water wheels and mill machinery and a highly interactive water play area for the kids. All for a more than reasonable price.
Excellent..... the welcome and information from the woman selling tickets was great, the quality of this renovated water mill is superb, then the enthusiasm and wealth of information from a volunteer explaining everything to visitors as you went around was really good. This mill is really quite impressive and if you have the odd mechanical bone in your body, you're going to find the three water wheels, sluices and channels outside fascinating, as I did. Inside, everything works as you move from one room to another. We had a considerable flow of information from the volunteer on duty to guide us, as he talked us through the machinery and processes, stage by stage. Historical context, social background and practical use of the equipment was explained and even if you don't get chance to listen, there are plenty of information boards. The woman in the ticket office came out to chat again, as we finished our tour. All in all, excellent!! These small and important ventures are really worthwhile supporting. If you take the Ratty to Dalegarth Station, take time to walk up to Boot and have a look at this mill. It isn't expensive and they will welcome your interest!!
Its superb historical value
Visited 2yrs ago, loved it. Currently undergoing 1m renovation so looking forward to revisiting in 2019 when it reopens. I visit the village of Boot a couple of times a month through my job and the work so far looks superb including new hydro-electric water wheel.
