We used James Slater & Co to purchase our first property. Although we were buying in Bristol, this was not a problem, and a surveyor was assigned to us very quickly. We received a detailed report, as well as a phone call from said surveyor the day of completing the survey. The phone call drew our attention to the most relevant findings of the report, as well as offering suggestions to resolve some small issues with the property. Communication was fantastic and turnaround was extremely quick. We would thoroughly recommend using James Slater & Co.

James Slater is a client of mine whom I have know for 20 years. His firm oversaw the renovation of another clients renovation project of a semi-derelict Grade 2 Listed Farmhouse which we ended up buying. Latterly we wanted to change the access and build a boundary wall which planners initially declined. James Slater Surveyors made recommendations, produced detailed drawings, liaised with planners and obtained consent for us. They hand-held all the way through the project and the end result is we got what we wanted and the planners were happy too as the property has benefited from these positive changes. I was introduced to James Slater by one of his long-standing clients and in turn have been pleased to refer the firm to clients and friends.
I contacted James as we were looking to buy a period property near Burford with a view to doing it up. He arrived punctually the next day and spent the best part of a day carrying out a survey. The survey report was very detailed yet comprehensible. Upon completing the purchase of the property James has been available to advise on alterations, maximising the space inside as well as liaising with Planning/Listed Buildings Officers. It is obvious that he has a wealth of experience. If he feels you may be making a bad decision or may be throwing good money to bad he will let you know straight away. Aside from the professional qualities I find him to be a very engaging and friendly chap. I would not hesitate to recommend his services.
Would not recommend this company at all, the proprietor is tardy and accepts jobs stating he has the relevant experience and when there is a query he later admits (post paying ) that he hasn't got much experience in the field of the subject he was dealing with for us. He is rude and doesn't communicate well , to our amazement as it is a very service. Due to his lack of understanding , care and attention to the details they have put us through extreme stress and difficulty and almost lost us the case - end result was we won the case but left with many thousands of pounds less than we should have as a result of his lack of experience in this particular matter and willingness to consult the evidence before him, disregarding all written contracts, acting as judge and jury in a case when only a report on condition of property was requested. Official reports to courts etc were 3 months late, when complained about this was just met with extreme arrogance and when dealing with such matters and a so called expert you would imagine them to be at least professional. The minute the money was paid to him the service fell through the floor. Be careful when dealing with this company as you could end up like us out of pocket.
