Some form of harbour protection at the mouth of the River Esk was present in the early 1300s with merchants from Lombardy & all over Northern Europe sailing to Whitby, to trade with the wealthy Whitby Abbey. The natural Whitby harbour was improved with quays, a bridge and a pier, perhaps the first attempt to shelter the harbour from the full force of the North Sea. The period circa 1702 coincided with an upturn in prosperity in Whitby due to the increase in whaling and the coastal collier trade between the Tyne & the Thames. Colliers needed a safe haven between the Tees & the Humber in the event of storms. Later, tourism started in Whitby during the Georgian period and developed with the arrival of the railway in 1839. Other significant Whitby features include the swing bridge, which crosses the River Esk and the harbour itself, which is sheltered by the Grade II listed East & West piers.

Approach to the lighthouse is by the pier where there is plenty of seating to enjoy the beautiful views over the beach and harbour, have an ice cream or eat fish and chips from one of the nearby takeaways. Unfortunately access to climb to the top of the lighthouse is currently unavailable due to the Covid 19 rules but still a place that you should visit during a day out to Whitby.

Great walk along the harbour wall... fish and chips as the sunsets... not a bad way to finish the day at the seaside!

Bracing walk with great views back into Whitby harbour and of the church and abbey.

I like seeing the lighthouse when me and my wife visit Whitby one of the places I like is up top were the steps are near the Abbey you get a really good view up there . And if your down were the bandstand is just look across and go up the hill to were the captain cook monument is you get a lovely view as well looking over to it from up there sit on one of the seats and watch the people and the world go by the time seems to stop . or get on a boat trip and pass the lighthouse or just walk down past the bandstand But one thing you have not got to forget your camera to take some photos of this lovely views you get when looking over to the lighthouse
