Unusual, beautiful statue - wooden 6 meter high dog with sensors, generating steam.

Mannes is a big wooden sculpture of a dog which was placed on the Stationsplein of Assen after the big reconstruction of the railway station area. He is located on the crossing of two light related works of art - lines of light following passing cars in the tunnel, and a cloud of lights around him which react to the footsteps of the passers by. He is also able to react himself to crowds of bystanders and in particular to children's voices. Mannes was designed by NIO architects and the artist Q.S. Serafijn from Rotterdam.

Lelijk ding, beter blijft ie weg
Mannes de hond is mij altijd al een doorn in het oog geweest. Ten eerste is deze veel te groot en daarmee een gigantische horizonvervuiler. Daarnaast staat mij de kleur ook niet echt aan. Tot slot heeft een hond naar míjn idee helemaal niets met Assen te maken.
Ook in de regen stond hij ons trouw op te wachten toen we op station Assen uit de trein stapten. Ook op het heetst van de dag, in de brandende zon keek hij ons na
Geniaal bedacht, een bruine hond tegen over een creatie van architectenbureau de zwarte hond. Hiermee is Assen herkenbaar.
