Cool exercise! I raced with my son to the top. There's a great guide over there telling stories.

1400something steps to get to it. Nice view from up there but the ruin is not in that greay shape nor does it have that much information on it. So while it is lacking in presentation it’s history tends to make up for it.
Actually disappointing to see once you've climbed the 1500 steps that it's only ruins, no more rooms or anything it's all broken down...Still the way up is funny with all these steps and the view on the summit is amazing. Be sure to wear extra clothes as the top is really cold and windy!
Steps are great for physical activity, the citadel not very well maintainten
Ignore what it says online: the trail to the castle is CLOSED until further notice (probably November) due to bears in the area. Yes, I saw a large brown bear on the trail with my own eyes, so don’t follow my example and hop the fence thinking you’re Simon Belmont. Check the Arges County Museums website (linked on the google entry) and although it’s in Romanian, if you see a big block of red text at the top, it’s probably telling you the castle trail is still closed because of bears. I was able to get a lot of good pictures from below and there’s a nice walking trail along the river. Yes, I also ran into a bear down by the river, but fortunately the stray dogs in the area served as my protectors and barked like crazy. Feed them some chips and they’ll never leave your side!
The Poenari Castle (Cetatea Poenari) is worth going up 1500 stairs. It takes about 30 minutes to go up but it's worth it. The Castle, the view is breathtaking. You can shoot some great photos up there with the castle, ruins, landscape, sunset, etc.
The view from the citadel is breathtaking but that is the only good thing about this place. The parking is not nice, the climb is hard and it will take a lot of energy and time, it's doable by children, and the citadel is in a poor very poor quality. Also there is no bathroom.
I would recommend to visit it if you have the opportunity. Bear in mind that it is only possible to visit it twice a day, at 10am and at 3pm Price is 6 ROM Environment is fantastic and it is very impressive to be in a historical place like this one. Also if you want to say that you have been in the real castle of Dracula, you have to come here! Furthermore you can also drive through the impressive Transfăgărășan
