The four star rating is a bit generous as the food quality is not quite deserving of the rating. The restaurant is located in an old house so the charm of such an arrangement helped. Our party of nine were seated in a room separate from other diners so that almost single handedly elevated the rating from three to four stars. Our group had the set menu offering priced at NTD 5000. A plate of stirred fried flat noodle, which is a classic dish in the “Ke Jia (客家)” cuisine, was added as an extra. The stirred fried flat noodle deserved four stars as the noodles were moist yet chewy and the seasoning was right on. Most of everything else were pretty good although nothing else warrants more than three stars in my view. The steamed fish was overcooked and the seasoning did not compliment the fish very well. The prawns were also cooked longer than optimal. While always a disappointment, overcooked fish or prawns is surprisingly common in all the restaurants I partaked in while in Taiwan. That said, this place is still better than the few restaurants that I had been to in the vicinity of “San Yi (三義)”. I have no hesitation going back to have another meal when I am in the area in the future.

Home cooked Hakka food in a traditional Hakka building. Decent food in a unique dinning setup. Worth a visit if you happen to be in the area... just to experience the Hakka setup.
Hakka Restaurant: Summary - Traditional, authentic Hakka dishes in a rustic environment. The Pros: The fried pork leg is a great blend of spices over tender meat. Prices are friendly and the service staff is efficient. If you want to see a restaurant in a traditional setting, this is the right place. The Cons: Most dishes are very greasy / oily. Finding parking spaces nearby can be daunting.
