Visited during a trip in 2018. Very old school, Samuel Smith, cash only pub. Dimly lit and yellow walls make for some bad interior images. Had a decent pint of Old Brewery Bitter. I read they don't allow electronic devices but I don't recall seeing a sign that said that when we entered. I read a Google review today that called these type pubs \marmite\, you either love or you hate it. I like that analogy. If in Chester again, I would take a pass on this pub.

A Sam Smiths-run pub so be warned the owner's outdated neurotic hobby horse rules are: - Phones/tablets/etc aren't allowed - No swearing That said, there is a lot going for the place. The exterior is dramatic and seriously impressive, and the journey in is unusual, climbing up a staircase to the Tudor rows at mid-level looking out on the street. The stained glass in the front window is beautiful and the snug area by the entrance is a genuinely cosy spot. The staff are doing their best in difficult circumstances. The main room has a beamed ceiling and all feels calm and relaxed inside. Other than one or two 'characters' around there's a friendly atmosphere, people of different backgrounds still chat to one another. It's popular with students, older folk and the odd couple entering for a quiet drink and to read a book. Naturally these pubs are marmite - some love them, some hate them, but as an example of the type of venue, you could do a lot worse. Even Humphrey hasn't managed to wreck this yet.

Fantastic beers from York but there is no food at all - unless you count chips (aka crisps). Very friendly staff in one of the oldest pubs in Chester but really, how hard is it to carry out routine maintenance and cleaning? The windows and glass enclosed lights are filthy and as for the upstairs toilet (men). Goodness me. No electronic devices allowed at all! And cash only - which usually means they aren't paying as much tax as they should.

Great pub Great beer,, no electronic devices are allowed to be used as to encourage conversation. This is a Sam Smith's pub, Tadcaster Brewery @ 2.04 a pint of Sovereign bitter you can't go wrong.
