Lovely country pub serving great homemade grub!

Very pretty village pub. Lovely garden (though it faces the road, it’s very quiet). The ideal seats are in the arbour immediately outside the pub. For the rest, benches on the spacious lawn. Very very slow service (we were warned at the outset so this isn’t a complaint, merely a record). Inattentive staff. Average to slightly better than average quality food. Nice range of choices. Not for an occasion where better quality food is required but decent for an ordinary occasion.

This pub is an iconic local country pub in a gorgeous historic building that I believe is mentioned in the Doomsday book (according to my partner whos a local!). The current husband & wife management team have got everything right here from the warmest of welcomes as you enter throygh the door, to the delicious home cooked food whose reasonably priced but generous portions ensures you'll leave with a full belly! I reccomend the fish plate, the whitebait - and the chicken curry always smells sooo good it almost makes me want to give up vegetarianism! The public bar is very snug and cosy with a real log fire blazing away in winter and the smarter main dining area reflects the ancient history of the building with exposed beams. Plenty of room outside for parking and summer fun in the beer garden where you'll often find a giant game or 2 to keep the kids occupied outside. These guys know what they're doing & do it well - the true sign of a good local is that it attracts both regular locals and customers from further afield and you find both in The Cretingham Bell.
