The castle was built between 1165 and 1173 by Henry II as part of his strategy to strengthen defenses in East Anglia and to regain control from the powerful Bigod family, whose main residence was nearby Framlingham Castle. The keep is well preserved but the outer curtain wall has long been dismantled. There are many interesting details and exhibits inside the keep and good views of the town and the coast from the upper floor. An interesting guided tour is provided by English Heritage who run and preserve the castle.

Very lovely castle and a very wholesome tour guide who was happy to answer and questions and seemed very knowledgeable about the land. Unfortunately some areas were off limits due to narrow hallways and COVID but this is no fault of the staff. If you're in the area it's worth a quick visit as the tour is a nice way to spend an hour.
Very pretty little castle, what is good about this castle is you can walk around the castle grounds with no charge, there is lots of grass around the castle where you can sit and have a pic-nic which is great. Have to pay to go inside the castle, amazing view from the top. Small car park on site, have to pay if not a English Heritage member.
Home sweet home just a stone throw away... Sunny old Orford , great place for families, dogs, cats, birds wildlife, humans, holiday makers & locals...
