Couldn't leave D.C. without visiting this museum. It was our last stop when we were in the National Mall. After visiting majority of the places in the National Mall, I almost skip this museum because the line was out the door to the sidewalks. However, the line move fairly quick. When you get inside the door, there is security check. First time seeing this at a museum. Almost felt like I was at the airport. They do a quick check of your bag, but nothing too serious. It was pretty quick. There are a few floors and each floor is dedicated to different exhibits. Jewels, artifacts, sea-life, etc. You have to be patient to see certain exhibits. It was a bit crowded inside with many tourists in D.C. Regardless, this museum should definitely in the top of your D.C. list.

I am always amazed with the many museums that constitute the Smithsonian. The American Museum of American history does not disappoint. In my mind, I tend to believe I am familiar with American history and realize how little I know when I arrive at this museum.

Many of the exhibits are closed which is a bummer. The exhibits that are open are great. Get an early timed entry pass because they close early and it is not a close like those inside can continue to look but rather you are able to leave on the hour. We only saw about half of the open exhibits which worked out for us as the kids were done but if you really want to take your time and see everything you will want to go early.
