Have recently been teaching and learning about Warmley during the First World War. Found out this memorial was built using funds raised by the local community just after the war as so many local boys had lost their lives- whole families in some cases. One of the local factories had been converted into a grenade factory, and the local women made them and slipped notes in to the soldiers on the front line. Some wrote back and apparently one couple met and married due to the love letters! There apparently was also an iron cannon in front of the memorial initially but it was scrapped when WW2 broke out to be again melted down for munitions. Anyway the ghostly figures, three in total appeared just before the 100th Armistice Day and really made me stop and think about my Grandad for a moment. Really beautiful, despite the noise from the local road.
