Best southern comfort food in Chapel Hill! Price is affordable. Considering you would spend same amount at a fast food place.

Hidden gem of Chapelboro! Before, I would drive to Durham for authentic home style southern food, but now I am both thrilled and scared knowing that such good cookin is near my house. I actually showed up after Walt's had closed for the day, but the neighborhood \boys\ (a kind group of older gentleman playing cards and watching baseball) welcomed me and made me a plate to eat anyways on the house. I had their bbq chicken, which is NOT a boring lump of meat covered in sauce- it is a proper spiced and stewed tasty delicacy known primarily to those from the Midwest and Texas. No sauce here. My sides were collards and potato salad. Collards were light- not stewed in lard but moreso slow cooked with a little vinegar. Maybe. Potato salad was amazing and everything you want in a southern potato salad. My meal was served with a potato roll to sop up any extra juices and I asked for some pork rinds (fried fat back) i spied in the kitchen. I was taking my meal to eat outside, not wanting to disturb the boys playing cards, but they insisted I stay and have some sweet tea. I usually strongly dislike sweet tea but could've drank a gallon of this perfectly sweetened elixir. I offered cash to the owner Bobby/Walt, but he wouldn't accept it. All in all I believe the meal would've cost 7.50. Cannot beat that price at all!! If you are a low key person who enjoys the local vibe and southern food, put Walts on the bucket list right now! Next I'll have to try their breakfast. And their fried chicken. And the fried pork chop

This place is exactly what you would think it is at seeing the outside. This is simple southern food. Almost everything is fried and the sides are full of salt, but it is all done well and with a simple, no frills atmosphere. Great neighborhood feel.
