I cannot recommend strongly enough a stop at La Maison du Visiteur for anyone visiting Vézelay, whether it be for the first or the tenth time. Unlike many traditional guides, the staff at the La Maison understand that visitors need not only to learn about the history of the Basilica, but also to feel a link between the creators of the church and their own lives. And this is exactly what they do: they take us beyond an understanding of the Basilica's marvelous architecture and sculpture, to a place where we sense a personal connection (whatever our own religious beliefs may be) to the sculptural and architectural representations of the inner struggles that all people face in their lives. In this way the visit becomes a journey toward a deeper understanding of ourselves, all while learning about the glories of French Romanesque art and architecture.

I found the guided visits, films and presentations offered by the Maison du Visiteur to be exceptionally well done. They truly enable visitors to experience and understand for themselves the light and sacredness that make Vézelay and its basilica so very special. The fantastic thing is that their tours are designed for everyone, whether or not you belong to any religion yourself. I walked past the Maison du Visiteur for years without realising what treasures are to be found within, and now that I have finally gone in I am recommending it to everyone.
Today we have visited “la basilique de Sainte Madeleine” in Vezelay. Our guide was Christopher of “La Maison du Visiteur de Vezelay”. It was for us the third time we’ve visited Vezelay and we thought we knew already a lot about the basilique but today we have learned a lot of very important things about the architecture and the meaning of various symbols that were used hundreds of years ago. Christopher had a well structured explanation, took his time for all our questions and showed us “the path of light”. Really impressing. Afterwards we went back to “La Maison” and there we had a very instructive lightshow and an amazing film. We are so glad that we’ve decided to let us been guided by Christopher. This place was amazing. Added such depth and understanding to the the beauty of the Cathedral. Chris’ passion was infectious! Don’t miss it!!!
Do not go there if you expect historic or scientific facts or information about the beautiful village and basilica. It is only about esoteric and pseudo-religious nonsense, although advertised for people who would like to learn about the historic context. It is a scam!
Highly recommended. Chris's presentation really helped us get the best out of our visit to the basilica.
Awesome time with Christopher discovering the Vézelay Abbey (Basilique Sainte Madeleine). We were expertly guided from the Maison du visiteur to the Abbey and then back for a very nice lightshow putting everything we learnt into perspective.
Je suis particulièrement sensible à l'esprit de La Maison du Visiteur : travail en profondeur, esthétique et spirituel, qui nous fait ressentir l'universalité de Vézalay. Cela fait un bien fou ! :) Les films présentés sont magnifiques (J'ai vu deux fois La danse du nouvel Adam !), les ateliers et visites sont passionnants. Les échanges avec l'équipe sont à la fois simples et très agréables. A ne pas manquer lorsque l'on se rend à Vézelay ! Merci à toute l'équipe de La Maison du Visiteur pour avoir su nous faire partager leur amour de Vézelay.
