My experience of living in Unite King Street Exchange Halls was terrible and is definitely not a 'home away from home' as their website declares. Amongst a multitude of issues with the room was a massive larder beatle infestation which plagued our kitchen and bedrooms for months. Many futile attempts were made by tenants to have the situation dealt with. Instead of listening or taking much action the staff chose to blame students for introducing the insects and even fined a block of tenants. Small steps were taken to fumigate small pockets of the building but throughout the whole of my stay insects were found in the kitchen and dropped from the ceiling onto beds and tables. The receptionist was very unfriendly and rude, laughing at the problem and didn't really bother helping us out. When the floor was replaced in the kitchen they didn't bother finishing the job properly and said it was up to us to remind them! One day when i was feeling unwell, a more senior member of staff who I had never met before knocked on my door and insisted to talk to me. I asked him if he could come back later since I was so unwell and he refused and persisted in talking to me saying that they were blaming the tenants for this insect infestation. The whole year was incredibly stressful and this reduced me to tears. It is more unfair because Unite is meant to be a more premium university accommodation and they charge more than normal university halls and the quality should be high for the prices they charge. They have taken advantage of the idea that students are less caring about their environment. To go through this in first year was terrible after leaving the comforts of home. If you are choosing University accommodation in Aberdeen please do not choose here.
