What a great find. My husband and I were staying in Chicago for the weekend and wanted some sushi. Umai was within walking distance so we decided to check it out. The inside had a very relaxed atmosphere and our server was great. She came by just enough to take care of us, never had to flag her down, and was the sweetest! The sushi was so fresh tasting and well prepared, no rolls falling apart here! An amazing experience. Try the black sesame ice cream, it's amazing!

Rude waiter. I asked this place if they had any beef broth and the waiter kept mentioning that they didn’t until a friend who’s been there before mention they do. So then the friend who’s been there went and spoke to the manager and worked out that they could add a beef broth instead of a pork one since I don’t eat pork. The Ramen was at 8/10, The asparagus beef rolls were insane in the membrane, The waiter just seem like he didn’t really have time for anyone and it was not OK. I believe he was a temp so that was fine, I’ll probably be back keyword probably. It would’ve been five if my experience with the waiter was a little bit less weird. They have amazing beers though.
The foods is superb, and the service second to none by lovely, polite staff. Exceptional food, decent prices, and a nice clean dining room. Sadly no dine in but still it was nice experience!
I got the Katsu Kare (Japanese curry over rice, with a pork cutlet). The portion was great for the price, especially considering that Japanese food portions tend to be on the smaller side (in my experience at least). So far, it’s the best portion for price ratio that I’ve encountered for Japanese curry dishes in the US. Their service and hospitality was amazing. I actually ordered takeout because in this time of the pandemic, I wasn’t sure of how busy the restaurant would be. It was actually not busy at all when I went, and since I had time to spare I figured I’d ask them if I could eat inside. They graciously let me have my own table, and even gave me a complimentary water without my asking. I would 100% go there again, but I wouldn’t get the Katsu Kare again. Now, they gave me more than enough curry which was awesome, and the katsu was well-seasoned (a little tough though), but in terms of taste, I feel like I could replicate it pretty easily at home with common ingredients from a grocery store and the Golden Curry product. That’s just my opinion though. Overall, Umai would be a great introduction to Japanese curry in the US, I think. I’m writing this review partly because I didn’t have the chance to leave a tip :).
I've been several tomes to Umai. One of my favorites Asian spots in town. I always start with the delicious fried tofu
