The one star is for the bar staff who were friendly and knowledgeable. However, what used to be a good pub for ales in the city is little more than a token effort designed to take as much money from people as possible. Expensive, generic range of ales on draught with two marked as \back soon\ remaining that way all night. Overly officious door stewards didn't help the atmosphere and the management policy in general was unfriendly.

Good atmosphere. Happy to accept kids up until 2100 which helps us get out once in a while. It's cold by the front door . Good beer choice, plenty of gins too. Chips were great but small portion. Not had a meal.
Never again! You don't get a second chance to make a first impression in my eyes especially under the current circumstances. My friend and I came to visit Portsmouth after 8 years and we were happy to support the hospitality trade as it has been my passion for years. The manager \Martin\ was so rude and unwelcoming as we walked through the door, Cocky attitude and the bar wasn't exactly busy. The food wasn't burnt but you could tell they hadn't changed the oil in the fryer for a while. Overpriced wine and food! The staff were lovely especially the girl with the turquoise hair but this place clearly has the wrong manager. You could even hear a member of staff coming to the manager with their concerns over someone popping out for a cigarette and the manager just shrugged it off saying if they lose their table then \meh\ Not the best way to get trade back through the door. My advice would be to pop a few doors down to Gin and Olive. Fantastic wine and cocktails and the staff can't do enough for you!
The bar staff are very helpful & mostly supportive. But when the customers are too noisy or maybe too young or maybe indulging in non licensed intoxicants the security staff were not very effective.
Had our wedding reception here. Super friendly staff, great food. We were made so welcome & looked after brilliantly by Martyn & his whole team. Also a great local pub.
