Afternoon tea is delicious with warm scones and home baked cakes

Plus points: A lovely friendly cafe with a warm welcome from the staff. The coffee was delicious and the tea cake very buttery and scrumptious. For that reason I have given three stars. Negative points: My friend and I ordered a cappuccino each with toasted crumpet and tea cake, then took our seats inside the cafe. We waited a good five minutes before the waitress arrived at our table carrying one cappuccino and one mug (presumably intended for staff use). Another few minutes passed before the second cappuccino arrived. A further 10 minutes passed before our crumpets and tea cakes arrived. The waitress said she’d fetch us each a knife, but didn’t return so I asked another waitress for two knives. These arrived at the table and were plonked down on the bare table and one of the knives was clearly dirty. I called another passing waitress to request another clean knife. She took it and returned a minute later with the SAME knife, now wiped clean. The dirty knife should have gone straight into the wash/dishwasher and a fresh knife supplied. All cutlery SHOULD have been wrapped in a paper napkin so it didn’t make contact with the table top, no matter how clean it may be. I dislike complaining but I have a kitchen hygiene certificate and have served in a cafe myself and this type of service would not have been acceptable. In a time of heightened awareness of hygiene it is absolutely vital that the cafes which we love to support with our custom, adhere stringently to immaculate hygiene procedures.
