The Fisherman’s Rest is the only surviving remnant of the Palace Hotel; the later having been demolished in 1969. It was originally the coach house of the hotel and was later converted to serve as a non-resident's bar to preserve the bars in the main building for the use of the hotel guests. I assumed that the name referred to a traditional drinking place for local fishermen but actually it is a memorial to a tragedy. The building was used as a temporary mortuary for the bodies of 14 lifeboatmen drowned in the Southport and St Anne's lifeboats disaster on 9 December 1886, when the sailing ship Mexico was driven aground near Southport by a storm. The lifeboatmen in those days were, of course, voluntary fishermen. The brass rail surrounding the bar is adorned with 14 mermaids in their memory and the story is told in pictures and signs throughout the interior. A wide choice of food is available and the quality is good. The choice of beers/ales/lagers is a bit limited but no complaints. Very friendly staff make this place overall a very good experience.

We arrived without a booking on ‘ eat out to help out ‘ week and we were met with such helpful staff. They found us a table outside and when the weather turned bad moved us inside without a fuss. Such efficient and friendly staff. - such a pleasant evening. Great food - good portions and nothing to fault. Best thing about this place is the staff!! Thank you !
