The Chequered Skipper Pub & Restaurant

What superb food. We ate here today sitting on the tables outside on the village green, amonst the conker trees and peacocks. All the food we had was top quality and really tasty. There was a Spanish twist to the menu and it was really delicious. The pub itself looked refurbished and the setting is in a proper village only a short drive from Oundle or better still an easy walk along the River Nene. I can not recommend this place more highly we will be back when visiting our family again. Thank you.

Lovely rural setting (original home of the World Conker Championship). Super pub, nice beer, great service, fabulous Sunday lunch (Black pudding scotch egg as a starter!). Worth finding.

It's a shame, as this could be a really great village pub. It was recommended by a friend in Oundle so thought we'd try it out. Service was (very) slow (it was not busy either) and portion sizes were small considering the price (18 for a roast). We had a small vegetable dish which had about 4 carrot sticks and a little broccoli and cauliflower for two of us! Vegetarian options on a Sunday rather limited. Have had far, far better Sunday lunches for 35 a head elsewhere. Won't be returning soon.

Ella, our waitress, couldn't have been more welcoming. She made our visit even nicer with her sunny disposition. The ingredients and menu were first rate but the execution on the night we went was just slightly lacking. I'm sure that it is usually amazing but my Barley Risotto was a little salty and the watercress garnish was yellowing. And some elements on my plate were cooler than others. We went on a particularly cool evening and as the first guests in the restaurant we found the room a little chilly. I'm sure that later in the evening it would probably have warmed up but I'll wear something warmer when we visit again. All in all, good value and great food served by exceptional staff. Will definitely visit again to give the food a second chance. And when we do, we will definitely order the Citrus Posset which was amazing!
