If you are in downtown Wilmington NC you should take time to experience a southern meal. Caroline greeted me at the door and walked me to a table. The food was excellent and truly in the style of the south. Even the Hummingbird cake (pictured) was made the way my great grandmother made it. The stone ground grits are a staple that is seldom served and here at The Basics they are cooked correctly making them enjoyable. Take time to look at the pictures on the walls. There is much history in this small restaurant that adds to the historically wonderful food.

Absolutely the best brunch I’ve had to date! Staff was very friendly and on top of everything! The food is reasonably priced and so tasty. I’ll be coming back again and again.
Came here for brunch one rainy weekend morning. The hostess seemed stressed out and so was incredibly rude to a couple traveling from out of town. That’s why I took off one star sadly! Luckily our server was awesome and efficient. He was able to provide our friend with a vegan breakfast bowl. Sadly the eggs we got weren’t cooked how they were ordered. But the rest of us loved our food. The pancakes were soooo good. Good price too.
Unfailingly polite wait staff. A nice selection of comfort food. Creative, tasty and good portions. Highly recommend their desserts - especially the coca cola cake!
Outstanding Service! I brought my film crew here (from NYC and ATL) and the staff was extremely on top of things. They had our orders out immediately and the food was incredible! The directors even requested we eat there again two days later. Thank you for making Wilmington look so good and supporting the the needs of the film industry. 10/10.
