Absolutely lovely from the welcome through until we left. Professional and friendly front of house team, as attentive as covid allows although we are happy pouring our own wine anyway. The food had such flavour, I had the terrine and stone bass and my partner the salmon and belly pork. Every mouthful a delight. The deserts were very exciting too. Maybe not a huge choice on the menu but better than offering an extensive one where the food is mediocre. Lots on the wine list to choose from. I'm not at all surprised this establishment has the accolades it does, they are well deserved. I just wish it was nearer my home.
Top-quality food in a pleasant setting, using the best of local ingredients. We ordered from the a la carte menu, three-course is great value with a good selection for each course. The wine menu is extensive and covers a wide range of tastes and prices. Our server was Jordan, also the front of house manager, his passion for his job shone through. Despite the ‘COVID secure’ measures in place, this restaurant has lost none of its ambience or standards.
I haven’t been to the Angel since Joyce Molyeneux died and have to admit that I was a little disappointed with the experience last night. Not that I didn’t have a great meal... Elly Wentworth can definitely cook, that is not up for discussion. However, the overall experience is not where it needs to be to charge the money they’re charging...the service is most definitely not there. They’re not lacking enthusiasm...they’re lacking a firm hand front-of-house to train the people they have to operate at Michelin levels. I ate the following night at RockFish and, the food was less satisfying in most ways, the price was 60% less and the service was honest and straightforward...exactly what you’d expect at RockFish (and the food, while primarily firmed, was all executed incredibly well. We didn’t go for the tasting menu...we went with a starter & main instead. We both end the scallops to start and this was probably the highlight of the meal...just a fabulous mix of flavors from the perfectly cooked scallops to the pickled hazelnuts. Very nearly the perfect creation. However, neither of us had quite the same high opinion of our fish main courses, although my halibut was quite enjoyable. The pre-dessert was pretty average, 3 of the 5 cheeses (which we chose for the dessert course) were excellent but the other 2 disappointing and the coffee was fine (but does anyone judge the quality of a restaurant from the coffee?). If I could grade it out of 10, I’d give my dinner last night a 7/10...I just can’t give it a 4/5, as that is what I am giving RockFish. I expect more of a restaurant like the Angel...the food has to be consistently the best and it has to be complemented with the best service and ambience. The Angel is not quite there today.
The best food we have had in a long time. Elly and her team made our trip to Devon. It doesn't matter if its lunch or dinner, if the Angel is open, you should go! 10/10. Thank you to everyone at The Angel, we will be back!
