Arman Rahavard Aluminium Raw Materials Supply and Production Company or ARAL Alumina was established in October 2018 as a private company. The purpose of ARAL Alumina is to construct a one-million-tonne alumina refinery. Alumina powder is the primary raw material for aluminum production with a global average of 35% of aluminium production costs. ARAL’s production capacity will increase in the second phase of the refinery to 2 million tonnes. By South Aluminium Company’s smelting potlines coming online bringing Iranian aluminium industry’s capacity to 800 thousand tonnes, Iran’s local alumina demand is increasing to 1.6 million tonnes. Aluminum production is foreseen to reach 1.5 million tonnes in the Outlook 2025 of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This is equivalent to 3 million tonnes of alumina consumption annually. Currently, Iran Alumina Company in Jajarm is the only domestic alumina producer with an annual production of 250 thousand tonnes, which does not meet the needs of the aluminum industry in Iran. On the other hand, alumina market in the world is facing a continuing shortage, and given the 40% share of energy costs per tonne of alumina, the construction of capital refineries for alumina is mainly concentrated in areas with access to cheap, abundant and clean energy, in particular natural gas. Iran holds the world's second natural gas reserves according to BP’s Energy Outlook 2018. ARAL Alumina refinery will be built on Persian Gulf coast with access to a port with a draft to receive 70,000-tonne vessels.
