The current Church of St Peter in Machynlleth dates from the 1780s when the rapid expansion of the non-conformist community precipitated a rebuilding of the medieval church. This medieval church dates from at least 1251, showing its Norman roots through its dedication to St Peter rather than St Cybi, the traditional founder of the church at Machynlleth in the 6th century. Extensive internal changes left the church as it is today; light, spacious and clean. The additions include the choir stalls and pews, two new windows and the silesian marble checkerboard floor. As Machynlleth was the capital of Wales in the medieval era, it is entirely likely that this is the church that Owain Glyndwr would have worshipped in.
