The market is steeped in history with a special Royal Charter granted in 1553. However, the market is well documented as far back as the 9th century. The current day market is firmly established in the city centre and runs the length of St Peters Street and Market Place. From August 2020 the market has extended its footprint to allow for as many traders as possible to have a stall while allowing for the necessary social distancing measures. Just approaching Christmas 2020 only essential stalls are allowed; including a butcher, cheese monger, bakery goods, takeaway food and lots of fresh fruit & vegetables.

It's good and busy market but this pandemic time very less people.
Really nice, vibrant venue for all tastes. From fruits and artisan bakers to beautiful jewelry, street artists and musicians. City is alive ️
Nice hive of activity. Some good artsy stalls. The colour of flowers and fruit are invitational. The food stalls have a good variety. I settled for chinese.
Very large open market. I would be hesitant to say \local\ Farmers market as there dosent seem to be very local produce. It's a bit on the pricey side but no doubt the freshness of it all. There are a few stalls that let the market down with their quite clear fake goods, which drags it down a bit. There is adequate social distancing measures in place with many sellers going cashless. What let's down the market is the buyers. Arrogant, rude, impatient people with no sence of personal space or compliance for who is around them. It's a shame but people in this day and age dont care much for others wellbeing. I highly recommend this market and town in all other aspects as it's always got something going on.
