Lovely grounds and heavenly chanting by the monks! Breathtaking sculptures - my favorite was the Dormition of the Blessed Mother!

A calming of the soul that can only be experienced first hand.

The art of Gregorian chant was almost lost shortly after the age of enlightenment..The french revolution nailed the last few nails. It was not until the 19th century that the Abbé of Solesme, Dom Guerangé, did his research on gregorian chant and single handily brought back the medieval tradition of Gregorian chant the old school way. Since then, monasteries from all over Europe send their monks to be trained at Solesme. The \High\ Mass of 10:30 am on Sunday is a real show down, procession with incense, candles and chant. ONe is welcome to make a silent retreat with the Monks ( about 100 brothers) no longer than a week. the first three days are tough, but after that, one runs to the chapel as if driven by the wind. After a week in this monastery, the outside world feels just very strange..one may feel like running back!..I did at least 20 silent retreats in Solesme from 1988-1996
