Vandaar de naam. Het snoepje werd bedacht door de firma George Bassett & Co uit Sheffield. Hun promotieverhaal was dat een vertegenwoordiger ooit per ongeluk wat snoepsamples had laten vallen en ze in de haast weer willekeurig in elkaar zette. De klant was zeer tevreden met het resultaat. En zo werd de Engelse drop geboren. Of zoals het in het Engels genoemd wordt: liquorice allsorts.
