Three years ago, we enrolled our son in Flex Ed. At that time, the program was student-centred. It was designed for kids who were seriously involved in sports or the arts or whose parents travelled a lot such that it was difficult for the child to attend a strictly regulated public school. At the beginning of every month, my son received all his assignments. Everything was due at the end of the month. This afforded my child the ability to decide to learn when and where he was best suited. This system worked well and my son thrived. He was self-motivated; developed a strong sense of personal responsibility; felt respected and trusted. All of this resulted in a growing self-esteem for my child. This academic year, we were relaxed about enrolling him in Flex Ed again. But the Program has done a complete turn-around. It has been a nightmare for all of us. The workload is overwhelming with tight deadlines for submission often accompanied by threats of punishment for late submissions. The program and teachers have become dictatorial and colonial in their approach. This is not a conducive atmosphere for learning. Not only does it quash a child’s self-esteem but teaches the child not to trust authority.

What a disappointment this experience was. Don't be fooled by the virtual tours or marketing materials. My daughter tried grade 10 with FlexEd this year. As a parent & mentor, my experience was filled with a serious lack of communication (until I withdrew her) and lack of professionalism on behalf of the teachers and principle. It is pretty bad when your 15 year old Autistic daughter asks to be moved to a different school and asks to redo grade 10 due to her lack of confidence in the education she received here.
