Top place to visit in Madrid. Set outside if Madrid with an easy four year and change bus that takes you there 8661 or 8664 right to the bus station. Google maps can tell you how to get there. This was built around early 1600's after Spanish victory over the French on the day or Saint Lawrence and hence the name San Lorenzo de El Escorial . Built at the highest point of the Spanish empire by Philip II which include a tour of the royal quarters where you can see the king's austere quarters with access to the center of the basillica. The views of the the various gardens from his quarters are phenomenal . He is also interred in a mousolleum of the kings and queens here including the half brother of Philip II named John of Austrian who defeated the Turks in a great naval battle. After doing the tour visit the garden for a great place to walk around in the sun and sun bathe with plenty of benches to sit on. The town has one place to eat that overlooks this complex directly. I was impressed by the awesome austere yet exquisite architecture. I believe this was based on the floor plan of King Solomon's temple.
