When my husband and I were young adults, we did not have the benefit of family support for a post secondary education. So when we became parents, we wanted to provide our son with a solid start in a competitive global workplace. Some people shared their opinion with us that kids should pay for their own university education or they would not take their studies seriously. We took this input to heart and decided to do more research on the subject. We did decide to go ahead and invest in an education savings plan, but also made a plan for our son to make his own contribution. Once he began university, his summer income would cover the additional costs of each school year: books, parking, gas, clothing, etc. By ensuring that only a small portion of his income would go towards entertainment spending, we would be modelling the reality of paying bills and the cost of living. So, here we are: It is already 21 years later and our son has graduated from our local university. The USC certificate we framed in red lacquer wood has hung on the wall all these years, honouring the commitment and completion of our family goal.
