Luke has had a huge impact on my coaching career. His extensive knowledge in program design and nutrition I believe, is second none. I have learned so much from Luke and consider him a outstanding coach, mentor and friend. If anyone is looking for next level coaching, I highly recommend Luke Rossmo.
Luke isn’t my primary coach, however he’s often at the gym – either coaching on the floor, or doing his own training – when I’m working out. Truthfully, I look forward to pulling up and seeing his car parked there because I know I’ll leave with a piece of Luke wisdom – some days it’s work-out related, some days it’s life-related. I’ve observed Luke do something that I think must be extremely difficult for a coach – he truly gets to know the members on the floor and how they respond to coaching – some of us need gentle pushing, some need a frank statement, some need a louder push, and he knows when to give what’s needed. Here’s an example: I was just a few months pregnant and doing a movement I had done just a few days prior, but on this particular day I was struggling – which then led to some less-than-great self-talk about my abilities and my body. Luke quietly walked over, asked me how I was doing – in a gentle tone, clearly recognizing I was having a “moment”. I answered honestly (he creates a space that you feel safe to be honest and raw) and said “Not good. I could do this the other day without a problem, and today I physically cannot do it.” Luke’s response was enveloped in heartfelt kindness. He said “Be gentle with yourself. Your body is doing things right now that we can’t even imagine, in order to grow a human. Your body is working hard already, there are going to be a lot of these changes to adjust to.” We’ve had a lot of real conversations about body-image and awareness – among many topics! Luke is a deep well of knowledge and insight - including technical knowledge re movement and nutrition as well as lifestyle related insight.
I have known Luke for many years and he has been my coach for 18 months. In that time he has helped me rehabilitate both a serious injury and chronic back pain. He is gifted at helping me articulate my goals, and creating concrete plans to achieve them. He supports, encourages, and pushes when needed. Under his guidance I have achieved more than I thought I could. Luke has the best approach I have come across to help me achieve my nutritional goals, while at the same time addressing my relationship to my body, to food, and to my weight. In a world where “thinner is better” is the implicit and explicit belief, Luke approaches nutrition from the standpoint of health being the goal. He has extensive training in both the science of nutrition and the science of behaviour change, and his kind but direct approach has been tremendously helpful to me.
Luke is one of the most empathetic individuals I have ever worked with in my adult life. His approach to training is very methodical and is backed by a wealth of knowledge regarding training, lifestyle, and nutrition. I have been working with Luke for just under a year now but the amount I have grown and learned from his guidance is impeccable. When I started training with Luke, I was suffering from chronic shoulder pain as a result of many years of volleyball and a poor rehab attempt after a rotator cuff surgery. I had always been weak in my upper body due to this and to my surprise, my lower body wasn't much better. After just a few months of training, I had already noticed changes in my level of pain as well as my overall strength. I started Olympic lifting (something I had dreamed of doing) within months, pain-free and have progressed rather linearly to this point as well. Luke does an amazing job of listening to what one has to say, and then using that information to create a program that is perfect for you. Luke takes into account all aspects of your life and then makes a perfect, totally unique program that is best suited for your needs and goals, and to top it off, he meets you where you are today. Not only is Luke a phenomenal primary coach, he also genuinely cares for everyone that is around him in the gym space. No matter who you are, Luke is always willing to help keep you safe and motivate you through every step of your workout. He does an amazing job and making people feel confident and empowered both in and out of the gym space. At the end of the day, Luke is not only a fantastic coach, but also a wonderful friend who I am very happy to have in my life. I guarantee that having Luke as a coach with help you reach any and all goals that you have.
I started working with Luke at OPEX when I felt I needed to invest in a more personalized workout routine. I was hesitant at first as I had temporary physical limitations and I didn’t think I would like the workouts - I enjoy playing sports but historically only worked out because I felt I 'had' to. It didn’t take long to realize what I signed up for wasn’t just someone programming workouts for me, but a personal ‘coach’ in the truest sense of the word. I actually enjoy going to workout now and while I am loving the physical progress I am making, lifting weights and working towards physical goals I would never have identified for myself, I think the most beneficial part is my one-on-one coaching meetings with Luke. He coaches me to increase my self awareness, set achievable goals, make a plan, and monitor my progress on everything from my sleeping habits, water intake, how to eat, and being aware of what my body is telling me to get the most out of my gym time. I knew the areas I needed to make lifestyle changes, but I struggled in doing it effectively on my own and with Luke’s coaching I have made a lot of progress on many small things that accumulate into a large impact on my overall well-being. Luke has many strengths, but I think what I appreciate most about him is his keen ability to know when to be gently supportive and when to push me, whether it’s about lifting ten more pounds or really figuring out what’s behind my lifestyle habits.
I met with Luke as I wanted nutrition coaching in order to lose fat and have my body composition reflect an active lifestyle. Together, we started slowly developing my eating and overall lifestyle habits so I could achieve my goals. We focused on sustainable changes. Luke was supportive when I did well and when I felt I was failing. Since working with him, everyone around me as made note of my results. I recommend contacting Luke if you feel you need some direction or a kick start in order to achieve your fitness and health goals.
In October of 2018, I completed an 18 day trek, pain free, in the Himalayan Mountains in Nepal. I am a man in his sixties, who nine months before leaving had lower back and knee issues and had difficulty and pain walking the previous six months prior to that. Luke was a miracle worker! In the nine months prior to leaving for Nepal he listened and heard my expectation and developed a rigorous yet flexible work out that resulted in a most memorable and enjoyable trek. An example of his listening skill and flexibility was when doing a pull sled activity that pained my knee because of the weight suggested. I stopped doing it and Luke responded by saying that was the right thing to do. He held back on the exercise and when he brought it back the weight was scaled back so as not to stress the knee while strengthen it. Luke followed my progress weekly and scheduled accordingly, always ensuring that my strength, flexibility and endurance were enhanced without undue stress. The added benefit was that I was enjoying the work out without being in continuous pain. Luke’s knowledge and attention to detail in explaining the exercises so as to ensure the right muscles were being activated were instrumental in attaining my conditioning. I much appreciated that Luke encouraged me to seek outside assistance when necessary, be it physiotherapy, and massage therapy or podiatric treatment. He would ask what they said and adapted the training schedule. Luke was instrumental in my physical preparedness but he was equally an active supporter of my trekking project.
