I have used the Neptune software for about 10 years and it has been excellent for navigating across and around the English channel multiple times. In particular, it's got some very handy planning tools that will work out the sailing times through multiple tidal areas (eg out of the Solent, across the channel, and then in through the Alderney race, across an 8 hour period, so you can optimise departure times. It has deep functionality (if you want it), like working out sailing times based on your sail performance and downloaded wind speed forecasts.
