The construction of the Ramsgate Port & Harbour began in 1749 and was completed in about 1850. The harbour has the unique distinction of being the only harbour in the United Kingdom awarded the right to call itself a Royal Harbour. Because of its proximity to mainland Europe, Ramsgate was a chief embarkation point, both during the Napoleonic Wars & for the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. Traffic signals are displayed at the root of Ramsgate's Northern breakwater. Three vertical green lights displayed here show that it is clear to enter and three vertical red lights mean no entry.

Port Ramsgate, historically important place with lots to see and public information boards explaining the context of the historical events and landmarks. Outside of covid, lots of pubs cafes . Great place to spend sometime.
