The Beauport abbey Located in the town of Paimpol , northern Brittany , France. It is one of the most visited abbeys in Brittany and an interesting example of the early use of gothic style architecture. The abbey was originally founded in the 13th century, overlooking Paimpol Bay and covering an area of almost 125 hectares. It was an influential abbey that controlled extensive lands both in Brittany and in England. The abbey also had income from local farmers and from trade in Paimpol Bay, so it became quite wealthy for several hundred years. The monastery lasted until the French revolution, when it was dissolved (as were all French abbeys) After that, the buildings were used for various purposes including a Town Hall, a school, a manor house and a cider press.

Beautiful building and ruins of what used to be an abbaye. Thé vegetation in the ruins makes them look very romantic.

The outside of this 12th century monastery looks great, unfortunately the interior was not accessible during lunch time. It is also the starting place for the Saint Jacques trail to Compostela.

We were late by 20 minutes, but the abbaye is worth visiting even to have a look of it from the outside.
