This is a very fine establishment with superb food and fine ale. There's also a vast selection of whisky to try too. You can also have a coffee or a tea if you if you like and the countryside surroundings are breathtaking and Sarah Brian and staff make your visit a really pleasant experience.

Popped in for the first time after a long cold walk, what a lovely pub and really friendly staff, we had a main course and pudding each, both were absolutely brilliant, really tasty home cooked food, good selection of your standard food pub cask ales such as Wainwrights and black sheep bitter, lovely warm open fire too which was just the ticket after a cold walk, a must if you are in the area, we will definitely be back soon, thank you and keep up the good work guys, 5 stars.

Cozy pub In the middle of the moors. Open fires and quaint decor almost make it feel like you are having a pint a century ago. The food is ok to good and the wait times are acceptable. More for a nice stop after a long walk than a pub meal out with the family.

Sunday lunch and feta beetroot salad. (Needed walnuts - missing crunch). Got in with no booking. Table service now. Fire burning in grate. Comfortable traditional.

We walk to the Packhorse from Hardcastle Craggs a few times a year, it takes us approx 1 hour 30 minutes on a good day!! The walk is amazing, you are ready to sit down for some delicious home cooked food. We tend to go on Sundays, the Sunday lunch is amazing. We did the walk on Sunday last and we weren't aware that the pub had changed hands as the food was perfect as always. We recommend you get to the Packhorse early as they can sell out fast! The pub is always a welcome sight and once inside it is fairly basic but its perfect for walkers and dogs alike with your often wet n muddy gear. We have dried our outdoor clothes in front of a lovely roaring fire in the midst of winter. Perfect. Truly a little gem.
