This review is of the non-military aspects of the station. Very nice naval base in an excellent location. Very good facilities (NEX, Commissary, etc.). Scenic, nicely maintained golf course. Obviously not up to Air Force base standards, but definitely in the top quartile of Naval facilities (from my experience). A key drawback I noted was the Bard Road gate, which appears to be permanently closed. This has the effect of discouraging physical activity, since it is the closest pedestrian gate to family housing. Consequently, rather than providing a short and convenient pedestrian walkway to nearby shops and restaurants outside the gate, residents effectively are encouraged to drive (yes, yes, budget pressures, security concerns, etc., aka excuses). Also, it would be nice if the music for morning colors and evening taps could be synced a little better (I don’t feel that so many separately disparate sound broadcasts are really necessary for effective colors.
