Bolton Castle was a grand family home as well as a defensive fortress and, despite being partially ‘slighted’ by Cromwell’s’ men during the Civil War siege, is still preserved in outstanding condition with many interesting rooms and features to discover including the Old Kitchens, Dungeon, Solar, Nursery, Armory, Great Chamber and Mary Queen of Scots’ bedroom. About one third of the rooms are fully intact and the rest of the Castle is almost completely accessible giving visitors great insight into its turbulent past.

Castle is very historical with great views all around. Wasn't able to discover gardens neither inside of the castle, however will re-visit post covid.

This is a terrific castle! Even if you weren't big on the history, it's worth it for the views alone. It has everything - portcullis, spiral staircases, Mary Queen of Scots' chamber and more, but it's the sheer amount that's there and that's been made available to view that's tremendous. A lot of effort has been made to bring it to life, and there's the right amount of information - enough to tell you all you need to know without deluging you. Kids loved it - plenty for them. Well worth getting up to the top of the tower! Clearly access is what it is in a building of its age and nature but the extent of the building that's open is wonderful. Everyone will have their own thing - for me it's the wear.on the stone steps and the groove in a flat cobble on the route through the portcullis which must have seen a lot of wheels! 31.50 for 1 adult and 3 children and well worth it. You need a good three hours minimum and it's worth wandering round the village or the local walks too, or the other nearby dales villages of Carperby and Redmire or any of them really. It won't disappoint!

Stunning piece of history. If you walk over from the Yorkshire dales it’s a nice walk over with a sweet little cafe too
