Excellent place to go for a walk and a must visit if you are in Sicily. Loads of different craters and aspects of the volcano to see depending on how much you’re willing to walk. Even if you just drive to the bottom without walking anywhere the views are good. We didn’t go up in the cable car but I would suggest just walking around for free is almost an as good experience.

We spent one night in the hotel there and then climbed Etna the next morning, with a guide. There's not much to do on the mountain itself except climb, but there are some smaller craters that are easily accessible. You have to take the cable car up, then you can walk or take a jeep up to 2900m. The final ascent to 3200m must be done on foot with a guide. We had planned to walk the whole way, but in the end we took a jeep and just did the last climb - don't regret it at all. The climb is not too challenging if you are fit, but we still had sore gluteals the next day! We probably walked for 3.5 hours (down as well). I would recommend going to the top to see the main craters. NOTE - would strongly recommend proper hiking shoes; some people in trainers struggled (you can rent some on mountain if needed). Overall - a nice experience.

Went with a tour and the guides were very knowledgeable. Fascinating landscape all beneath a volcano which could erupt anytime.

There are many surprises for the first time visitor who has never been on a volcano before especially the alive and kicking most active one. First shock, there are people still living on lower slopes. Because the lava soil is so good for the agriculture that they probably want to hold on real tight to the land hoping somehow it will stop it from being swept away. Secondly there's a whole lot of touristy ski resort kind activity going on. Tour buses, jeeps, hotels, refuges, cafe, hiking, mountain biking and God knows what else. And yeah a cable car to take all of them to the top. I guess the locals know how to milk their cash cow. And the 3rd is not so much of a surprise but from distance it looks like a snowcone that has a big giant hole from where the lava erupts but actually there are many carters of different shapes and sizes so it can still surprise you by gargling, spitting while you're looking at another one. And the top level, yes you guessed that right, is all barren like Mars with gravel, mud and frozen lava but some stubborn plants still manage to grow there. Mother Nature never stops amazing me.
