Very cool place and very relaxed. You can buy or browse anything chess, backgammon, go, etc related. The sales person in front is very knowledgeable and very easy to talk to. They have tons of specialty sets as well. You can also hang out in the back to watch chess games. For a small fee of 5 an hour, you can even play games in the store. The atmosphere is very old school and it's easy to lose hours playing against others. For now, the indoor area is open. I was told it will stay open as long as indoor dining is allowed. Highly recommend visiting, even just to browse, talk about the games, or watch other people play. Definitely a great place to play with a much more relaxed environment than Union Square or Washington Square Park.

We purchased a chess board set from CF. It arrived damaged in transit and it is now forth week of my \discussion\ with the CF owner about returning this item. This company does not have any rudimentary version of return policy and is not willing to accept any return! Unbelievable... I would not recommend this company to anyone who loves chess and chess community.

Do they sell bright colored chess pieces to teach beginners?

One of my favorite places in the city. Great selection of boards and pieces and run by one of the greatest, friendliest, guys I have met. Open late and good place for a nice challenge if you want to play as well. I think it is a cornerstone of the village and ripe with memories and history.

We had a great conversation with the owner, learned quite a bit about the history of chess pieces and design, as well as getting a superb deal on a new beautiful chess board and wooden pieces.
